Control:
Total joint replacement is a major operation that requires specialized
pain relief. Your doctors will work with anesthesia, nursing and
pharmacy to make your surgery as comfortable as possible.
Pain control methods are tailored to individual patient requirements.
Most patients will use Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) which
administers pain medication directly into the IV when the patient
pushes a button. The joint replacement suites are equipped with
remotely monitored pulse oximeters, which make it safe to use higher
doses of pain medications with less fear of side effects.
Nerve blocks and joint injections are supervised by anesthesia.
A combination of techniques will be planned for your surgery to
provide the best and safest pain control possible for your surgery.
Admission / Discharge planning:
Medicare and most insurance companies allow 2-3 days in the hospital
for total joint surgery. The admission and discharge planning team
will work with you to insure a smooth and safe transition from in
hospital to at home recovery.
Kathy Jackson is the joint team leader for discharge planning.
The discharge planning team understands Medicare and insurance rules.
They will work with you to be sure you have the support you need
when you leave the hospital.
